Lanzarote is an island of the Atlantic Ocean that belongs to Canary Islands. It has a surface of 845.94 km². It is the third most populated island of the Canary Archipelago, after Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

On the north of the island, a few kilometres from there, it is located the Chinijo Archipelago, composed by the islands of La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara, and the islets of Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste.

The main and capital city of Lanzarote is Arrecife, and its second most populated town is Teguise.

The island has many and variated monuments, natural and rural parks which are protected by the Government of Canary Islands. Among them we can highlight Timanfaya National Park (Montañas del Fuego, that means “Fire Mountains”), Los Jameos del Agua (a natural cave), La Cueva de Los Verdes (a natural cave), El Mirador del Río (viewing point), The Monument to the Peasant, and the Cactus Garden, all of them belong and are managed by the island government called Cabildo.

Moreover, we can underline other private centres such as Cesar Manrique Foundation and José Saramago’s House, as well as other museums and places of interest in the island.

In 1993, UNESCO declared Lanzarote a Biosphere Reserve, being the first island in the Canaries to get this title.

We can highlight parties like the Patron Saint of the island The Virgin of Sorrows, whose celebration brings together thousands of pilgrims who come on foot from all the places of the island until the hermitage located in Mancha Blanca.

The most important touristic areas are Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise, apart from the area of Puerto Calero and The Club La Santa.

The island is one of the most important touristic destinations of the Canaries, which receive more than 2 millions of tourists a year.
